Artist Statement by Eugene Chen

The sculpture-like black and white nude photographs created under carefully arranged lighting conditions have always intrigued me. After having seen and appreciated numerous fine works by avid photographers, I decided to delve into it. This is my first attempt to produce pictures of this nature.

My intention in this project is not just capture these images, but also to find the unusual in the usual. The human body has been constantly photographed ever since the beginning of photography, and female nudes have never stopped arousing feelings ranging from pure aesthetic pleasure to sensual or erotic emotions. Making the images look interesting and fit into the fine art genre is the main goal. I chose to use a mostly low-key approach and simple props to strongly focus attention on the subject against an uncluttered background so that the interaction of light and body contour is better emphasized.

In the process of trying to obtain the desired final product, I was able to explore techniques that were unfamiliar to me but have great value to my learning experience. The communication with models, the arrangement of lights and composition, the preparation and use of props, the printing and finishing, all made the process energetic and personal.
